Have you ever had one of “those” months were it seemed like the gods were conspiring against you? Well…that is the sort of month I’ve had since the middle of April. Of course, I don’t really have a legitimate complaint when you consider all the terrible things that have happened in that time. Just this Monday, an F3 tornado swept through a small town just a few miles northwest of me (Van, Texas) and destroyed about one-third of the town, killing two people and injuring many others. All around us, we see problems, turmoil, and unrest, but we have a choice in how we respond to these things. Instead of wringing my hands in despair (I must confess I did engage in a “little” hand-wringing), I am going through my bathroom cabinets and gathering up all the hotel bath soaps, shampoos, etc. I was saving and taking them to the drop-off for donations. It’s a small thing, but it could mean a lot to someone needing a good hot shower and clean hair. A hot shower and clean hair, come to think of it, is not really a small thing after all. I know this is a wine blog and I should save my “whine” comments for other venues, but I feel like I’m not the only one who needs a “kick in the pants” every once in a while.
So, if you’ve been feeling a little sorry for yourself, take heart…you are not alone. We all tend to become self-absorbed once in a while…let’s just not linger there.
Get out…of yourself. Do something nice for someone else. Give something away. Tell someone you care. Grab a good friend, a great bottle of wine and get outside. Celebrate life. Celebrate small joys.
Life is too short not to.
